WHO HEARD ABOUT ARTIFICIAL WOMB ?
Because of my experience, I realized that very few people are aware of the present medical advances. I found this situation really surprising.
Here is a debrief of the recent advances :
- In 2007, members of the University of Tokyo's staff, presented an artificial womb's device aiming to improve the in vitro fertilization techniques.
- In 2002, the professor Hung-Ching Liu at the University of Cornell in New York announces that she successfully implanted a human embryo into an artificial womb that she preliminary created.
- The researcher Thomas H Shaffer delivered an artificial amniotic liquid that can save premature babies lives. Thanks to this technique, the survival rate for babies weighting less than 1.65 pounds is up to 70% instead of 30%.
The responsibility of the State and the Citizen
The State takes an important place in the controversy as well as the national debate because it is the State who decides if ectogenesis is being developped (artificial womb). Actually, it is the laws of the country that will allow the progress of the research on artificial womb. But it is also the State who must decide whether or not artificicial womb IS legal. To conclude, the State is a crucial player in this controversy.
